Nervous Nelly

That’s what I’ve been as of late.

Nervous.

About this blog and about…the suburbs…dun dun dun.

We’ll just address the blog for now because it’s less scary.

It ALL started with a late night phone call from a friend that involved a big ol’ ninja comment.  A ninja comment is something that is said and then sits there all quiet and stealthy like a ninja until suddenly BAM it attacks you at the most unexpected moment.  I got owned by my ninja.

The ninja comment was as follows:

“I like the blog…a lot.  It’s a little self-indulgent and, don’t be offended, but you’re a much better writer than I would have guessed”.

Uhhhhhh WHAT?!  My blog?  Where I talk about my life, my breakfast, my cat, and my favorite lip gloss?

So this person had been drinking AND this person is not my target audience…him being A BOY and all.  But still, I like this person a lot and really respect his opinion on things like humor, entertainment, and artsy stuff.  I sorta defended myself, mostly ignored the comment, and just let the ninja just settle in my brain realllllllll nicely.  Over the next few days I sat down at my computer to write a blog post and each time I tried, I was ninja attacked.  Self indulgent.  I couldn’t get past those two stupid words.  So I didn’t write.

Here’s the deal.  I have been a blog reader for years and years, since before they were even a popular thing (oooh look at me…self indulgent AND snotty) and all of the blogs I’ve stuck with over the years are about the writers’ lives.  Some of them even posts pictures of themselves EVERY DAY to show people what they’re wearing.  At least I don’t do that.  It would be SO tragically boring (I wore the same thing three times last week).  My point it, I have followed these women through dating, depression, marriage(s), kids, separations, deaths…and their breakfasts.  I have sat at my computer and cried with them, celebrated for them, cheered for their kids and mostly laughed at them.  I’ll probably never meet or speak with a single one of them, but I read about their lives every single day of mine.  That’s the kind of blog I wanted to write this time around (I even say so on my ‘about me’ page).  So yes, my blog is a little self indulgent at the moment.  It probably always will be.  I’m mostly just trying to write as frequently and openly as I can.

I did some research before I started this blog on helpful tips and suggestions and one of them was write what you know, in your own voice.  Write how you talk.  Write what you want to read.  I think I’ve done that so far.  This might just end up being a way for my family and friends to keep up with my life somewhere outside of Facebook.

I can accept that.

But maybe a newly married girl, who’s just trying to figure it all out, will stumble upon my blog.  Maybe she’ll see herself in me and will read a little more.  She’ll find the post about breakfast at Lucille’s.  She’ll invite her girlfriends to meet there for a Sunday brunch.  They’ll try the beignets.  Maybe they’ll LOVE them.  One of the girls will say “newly married girl who’s just trying to figure it all out, how did you FIND this amazing place?”  to which the newlywed girl will most certainly reply “the Midwest Mountainess came here.  She writes one of my favorite blogs, you should check it out”.

That’s my dream for this blog.  Indulge me.

Weekend Recap Part 2

So this is awkward.

It’s the weekend and I’m doing a recap of last weekend.  So not my fault.  I blame WordPress for deleting my hours of hard work on Part 1.  In retrospect, WordPress MAY have been looking out for my best interest considering the post ended with me pee’ing in a portable ‘bathroom’.  I’ve never been good at seeing the signs.

Anyway, Jon was gone last weekend so I had a nice and relaxing selfish weekend at home.  I did work quite a bit, but also got to catch up on time with good friends.  It was a good time because it was time NOT spent at a concert or bar where yelling is required to communicate.

Erin and I met up for a long overdue solo brunch at Lucille’s.  Neither of us had ever been there before so it was fun to try it out!  The bloody mary’s were delicious, the weather was beautiful and the food was of the brunch variety so it should go without saying that we devoured it.

WHY is brunch so delicious and so bad for you?  Another question – why does brunch always involve about 6 different beverages per person?  We had a coffee, waters, two bloody mary’s, and a latte all on our tiny little table combined with beignet’s, two giant plates of food, miscellaneous sauces, brown sugar, creamer etc.  It takes a lot of ingredients to make up a successful brunch I guess.

This weekend I also had the pleasure of hanging out with Miss Finley so her mom and dad could go enjoy a concert and night out.  Excuse me did I say Miss Finely?  I’m so sorry.  What I meant to say was Princess Finley.

Finley is very unique and didn’t wan’t to follow trends by making just any old Valentines day cards for her parents.  I took her to Target and let her choose an art project to make for them and she chose sea life window decals that she got to color herself : )

After Finley went to bed, Ashley came over to visit and watch the Grammy’s!  Not much to report there except for how gorgeous Adele looked…

…and how much I hate Gwyneth Paltrow for looking this amazing…

…not fair.

I’m going to change the subject and stop boring you with my weekend and instead bore you with my Valentines Day!  Yay!

Jon and I celebrated as married for the first time and it was really nice.  We had a great dinner at Ocean Prime at Larimer Square.  I always love going to Larimer because it’s so beautiful and festive 365 days a year.

I gave Jon a round of golf at the Princeville course in Kauai and he got me a beautiful bracelet from my favorite jewelry designer.

I ALSO received a single rose from the restaurant before we left and I decided to be incredibly generous and re-gift it…

…Happy Valentines day Marlo!

She went absolutely bonkers over it for about five minutes until she eventually turned it into a chew toy.   Because she’s a cat/dog.

In honor of Valentines Day and of Love, here is a video for you all to watch.  My best friend Vanessa is getting married this summer and these are her engagement photo’s!  I did not take the photo’s for I did not yet have my camera nor do I live in Texas (where she lives).  She did send me the raw files and I did my best at editing them on my ancient programs on my ancient laptop.  I think they’re fantastic because THEY are fantastic.  Enjoy!

Weekend Recap Part 1

The FIRST time I drafted this post I wrote that the pretty photo above was there to ‘mislead and lull you into a false sense of security because things were about to get real’.  I continued to write, upload photo’s, and edit for over two hours at which point WordPress decided to delete all the hours of progress I had made.  I nearly chucked my computer out the window.  I actually had to walk away from my desk because I was going to sucker punch the keyboard.  So I have kept that photo there this second time around in part to calm me, but mostly to re-create everything I had written earlier.  I’m retracing my steps.

I would like to make a note about this post before we begin.  In order to truly enjoy the suspense and comedic payoff, please don’t scroll down further than each line you read at a time.

Here goes nothing…

Jon was out of town AGAIN this weekend for a bachelor party in Las Vegas so I was left to work and entertain myself.  I obviously have no photo’s to post about his trip.  In fact all I know about his trip is that there was zero sleep, the opposite of zero amount of blackjack, a fanny pack wearing future groom,  and a Motley Crue concert.  When I googled ‘Motley Crue fanny pack’ for a photo for you guys, I almost pee’d my pants at what it gave me:

…god I love google.

Jon flew straight from Vegas to San Francisco for a ‘business meeting’ which I’m convinced was a total ruse.  Lately, Jon has been making an unhealthy habit of hanging out with my favorite people without me.  This so called ‘business meeting’ was no different in that he got to spend 24 hours with MY cousin Ryan.  Who Jon wouldn’t even know if I hadn’t graduated high school, gotten accepted into college, worked at a golf course on pelican lake, moved to Denver, and eventually forced him to fall in love with and marry me.

The amount of abbreve’s (that’s an abbreviation for the word abbreviation…it’s complicated) and ‘That’s What She Saids’ I must have missed out on is nearly killing me.  I bet they have all these lame new inside jokes that I’ll never get and instead they’ll just laugh and ignore me anytime we’re all three together.  They’re truly diabolical.  Well guess what boys…so am I.  Take this:

Nice capris and lady scarf.

And as for you?

Nice life.

Ahhhh.  I feel much better about myself now.

SO.  The reason this post is entitled Part 1 is because when I first looked back on this past weekend it appeared quite uneventful.  In further retrospection I realized that it wasn’t thanks to a brunch mentioned earlier, a photo-editing night, an awesome gift from a friend, and a birthday celebration.  I have proof in the form of pictures.

No Ryan not fake pictures from google.

Pictures on my actual camera.  I had JUST as good of a time as you two.

That post will be coming tomorrow.  TODAY I had already planned on posting a two week delayed weekend recap.  It’s delayed only because this time the pictures weren’t on my camera, they were on a friends and I just recently acquired them.

So two weeks ago (the last time Jon was out of town having fun without me) a big group of friends and I went to Red Rocks first ever Winter concert.  It was amaze balls.  The performers were Common, an awesome DJ, and Atmosphere (go Minnesota!) and it truly was a blast.  We started the night out pre gaming and layering at our place.  For the record, I was layered the most expertly out of everyone for I am the most expertly trained.  Again…go Minnesota!

We then packed into two vehicles, one of which was a giant suburban being driven by our hired driver: a pirate joke loving woman named Brenda.

There was a prize for  knowing the most answers to said pirate jokes…

…a room temperature can of bud light!  So congratulations Amy for knowing the answers to jokes such as:

Q: What is a pirate’s favorite country?

A: Arrrrrrrrgentina.

I mean come on.  I came up with this and won nothing:

Q: What is a horny pirate’s worst nightmare?

A: A sunken chest a no booty,

Right?  I should have gotten at least half the warm beer.

Something you may not know about Red Rocks is that the tailgating is as much fun if not more than the actual show.  PLUS it presents the perfect photo taking opportunities:

There were lots of surprises that night…

…such as a plentiful amount of ‘stuff‘ being sold in the parking lot (excuse the crappy photo but he got mad at me for even snagging this much)…

…illegal fertilization/avoidance of port-a-potties…

…and many people being confused into believing they were ‘thug’.

Like I said…surprises:

All jokes aside, ‘for a hot minute’ as Brandi Glanville would say (RHOBV joke again):  we had a fantastic time.  There was this palpable energy shooting through the entire facility that allowed everyone to let loose and get crazy.  At one point I was standing at the base of Red Rocks after getting a beer and I had a ‘come to jesus’ moment.  I looked up at the however many thousand white people getting down (pretending to be hard core) to Common and Atmosphere in Patagonia’s and Smart Wools and thought…only in Denver.  I love this city.

Please don’t be overwhelmed by my ‘bad assedness’.  It comes naturally.  I get it from my mom : )

Also, don’t be intimidated by Hanna’s cuteness – she comes by it naturally, from her face.  So cute.

There is no better explanation of what the ENTIRE crowd/night was like than this photo:

Chaos/hardcore thugging with hardcore light beer.  So fun. Until this happened…

…looks fairly innocent at first glance…

…wrong.  Because we thought documenting THIS shortly after the TWO (delicious) and giant (warm) vodka filled hot chocolates was a good idea…

…I told you in a past post AND earlier that I was going to post less fluff and more ‘realness’, well…

…shit just got real.

P.S. Peeing.  We’re just peeing.

Hey It’s Your Birthday…

Max, I missed your 25th birthday on my blog by exactly one hour and thirty seven minutes.  Why? Because I was partying with you at Rock Bar and driving your drunk butt home.

You are truly one of a kind.

As well of one of the best unexpected things to come out of a not so great job.

(nice photo bomb danielle)    : )

Thank you for being such a wonderful friend and for sharing your sister with me.  You’re one of my favorites.  HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!!!!

iPhone Photo Purging

I realized today that I have HUNDREDS of fun and random photo’s on my phone that have never seen the light of day.  I started at the beginning (early last summer) and I’ll randomly throw some up here and there until I catch up!

The INCREDIBLE stage at the U2 @ Invesco Field show.  BEST concert ever.  Definitely once in a lifetime.

Busted Marlo sleeping like this.

ALMOST to the top of a beautiful hike we took this last summer in Boulder.

Some beautifully unique foliage on our way to the top.  What a pine cone looks like before it looks like a pine cone.

My hiking companions leading the way – Matt – Katie – Jon

We made it!

Miss Livi on a ride at the MOA.  Yes I went with her – I’m her big sister!

A photo of my parents backyard the day we decided to have the wedding there! So beautiful and green!

MY Liz at a backyard BBQ.

Manna serenading her favorite girls : )

Jess and Max (who both just recently had a birthday)!

A simple photo showing how incredibly beautiful Minnesota is.  Wide open spaces.  It makes my heart ache.  There’s nowhere I liked driving alone more.

Fabric swatches from my wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses that came with me everywhere for decision making purposes.

Tailgating at Red Rocks before the Ray LaMontagne show with my girls!  And our loyal photographer – Jon.

Awesome perspective photo from the show (by me).

Erin, Ashley, Ali and a creeper handlebar ‘stache.

Self portrait of my handsome husband and I at our friends Mike and Jen’s mountain wedding.

My GORGEOUS friend Ashley sporting my favorite haircut of all time at the wedding.

The two of us at the wedding sporting some awkward poses : )

Proof that Jon and Marlo love each other.  Napping and spooning.

Marlo looking creepy.

Quite possibly the BEST mullet of all time.  Go rockies!

Jon’s beautiful suit, shirt and tie for the wedding.  Took forever to find exactly what I (we) : ) wanted – but this was finally it!

Microbrew mania @ the Ale House.

A day at the pool with Miss Finley…notice anything strange?

Haha.  I’m so embarrassed.  Her mom pointed out her swimming diapers and I chose to not pay attention and grabbed a regular one.  Poor girl – we didn’t stay long : )

Thankfully she doesn’t appear to be too traumatized.
