New York New York!

It went (sort of) like this…

Jon: So…I don’t really know how this works, or if I’m supposed to just surprise you or something…but should I be planning something for our 1 year anniversary?

Me: I don’t know how any of this works either, but it would be fun to do something memorable don’t you think?

Jon: I’ll go look at a map.

Me: (internal squealing)

Jon: How about New York City?

Me: I was hoping for a nice dinner but I guess I’ll get my luggage!

Jon: Don’t be expecting this every year.

Me: I will won’t.

And just like that the plans and all my future expectations were set.  We were going to NYC to celebrate our first year of marriage!

Considering that my favorite things to do are eat, drink wine, take photos, shop, and wander around cities…I was pumped that we were going to the PERFECT place for all those things. The last time we visited was our first time so we had knocked a lot of the obvious touristy things off the list.  This trip I decided I wasn’t going to be a tourist but instead a traveler.  I was looking forward to enjoying the city in a different way.

While I did take quite a few photo’s, I went about it in a slightly newer way this trip.  Often times I can get carried away taking so many pictures that I constantly have the camera at my face rather than experiencing what’s surrounding me.  This time I chose one main day that I allowed myself to go camera crazy with and most of the other time I left my camera in the hotel or my bag and just used my iPhone.  It worked wonderfully.  I still got to scratch my creative itch but didn’t miss out on participating in the fun.

Our first night in NYC we scratched Jon’s itch of wanting to pretend to be Don Draper for a night.  Yes, we’re Mad Men nerds.  He did a little research, we got gussied up, and we went out for a night on the town Draper style.

Our first stop was the Grand Central Oyster Bar in Grand Central Station.  *please excuse crappy iPhone photo’s but I was trying to enjoy my night, not stage dramatically beautiful photo’s for you people : )

I agree.

DISGUSTING.

In my wise old age I’ve become a pretty adventurous eater, and adventurously eat those oysters I did, but I did not enjoy one single second of it.  I hate oysters.  I guess my dreams of being a snooty fancy pants has to go down the drain.

Luckily we rebounded with one of my favorite meals I’ve ever eaten in my life.

In keeping with the Mad Men theme, we made our way down the beautiful Midtown West neighborhood to Barbetta, where Don Draper has dinner with a lovely lady on the show.   What made us want to go there was the beautiful NYC patio they’re seen dining at and the fact that it’s New York’s oldest restaurant at 106 and the only restaurant in America that’s been named a Historic Establishment.

I walked away from the meal being able to confidently say I will probably never eat better mozzarella cheese or gnocchi in my life.  It was absurd how good this food was.

We had a lovely experience with lovely conversation and I still have dreams about the gnocchi melting in my mouth.

The next morning began the day I chose to go nuts with the camera.

The first place that I chose to go camera crazy at?  Where else…

Central Park is one of those places that’s just unexplainably magical for some reason.  You just have to experience it to both realize how enormous it is and also to feel what it’s like to wander so far in that all of a sudden you look around you and there’s nothing but tree’s and sky.  Not a building in sight.  Even no people sometimes which is a complete anomaly in New York City.

I told Jon that Central Park seems to be one of the most necessary places I’ve ever been to.  Necessary in the sense that I think New Yorkers would go absolutely bonkers without it.  It couldn’t ‘not exist’.  We weren’t even in the city for 24 hours before we walked into the park, but even we felt a sense of relief to step out of the concrete jungle and into a place that forces you to slow down and exhale.

Our walk through Central Park came after having brunch at Sarabeth’s on 5th ave and Central Park South (yum) with this guy…

…and was the route we took to get to the American Museum of Natural History.

It’s really strange, but it actually takes you a minute to think “wait…are these real?” and realize that yes…they are.  They are not statues, they are not a likeness.  They are real god damn dinosaurs that were dug out of the real god damn earth.  It’s NUTS and a little bit scary.  The dinosaurs aren’t scary.  The fact that people think they didn’t exist is scary.

You bet I did!

Jon: Eww that’s so gross, do you know how many people have touched that thing?

Me: Are you insane!?  We’ve been riding the subway!  How many people do you think touch the screens to buy the tickets, the railing walking up, the seats etc.  I am NOT going to miss touching a 140 million year old dinosaur bone you bone head.

It was worth it and to the best of my knowledge I didn’t contract anything deadly.

Just awesomeness.

The thing that’s so cool about this museum is that it’s science and true history.  It’s all right there, right in front of you, and it’s so educational.  All facts.

If they don’t know the exact answer to something, they tell you right there.  They speculate as to what they think the answer is based on scientific reasoning, but they tell you they don’t know when they don’t.  More things should be that way.

On every trip we go on I inevitably get a little sad that I can’t scoop up everyone I love and bring them with so that they can see all the same things.  Being at the American Natural History Museum was particularly tough because of Livi.  She would have gone NUTS over seeing every animal, fish and insect that’s ever lived.  Screw Disney World.  Every kid should see a real dinosaur skeleton once in their childhood.

Incredible.  Gargantuan.  Enormous.  Makes you realize how teeny tiny us human beings are in size and importance.

Not blaming anyone for anything…just stating the cold hard facts.

I love whoever is in charge of that place and am so happy that really really smart people exist to give the rest of us a place like that to go and learn.

That concludes our Sunday afternoon in the big city.  Now onto Sunday evening where we brave the Subway yet again and then huff it over the Brooklyn Bridge for the best night ever.

This is the partially completed 1 World Trade Center which is going up near the September 11th Memorial site.  The last time we visited, we went to the 9/11 site and it was still just an enormous pile of rubble and nothing, it’s pretty darn cool to see it completely transformed and triumphantly moving on.

We stumbled onto an incredible gem located near the base of the bridge on the Brooklyn side called The River Cafe.  It was such a beautiful little spot where we sat and admired the sweeping skyline views, reminisced on the last year, and called my mom to tell her thank you again for all the work she did a year prior for our wedding.  It was an unplanned several hour stop, but ended up being one of my favorite parts of the trip.

Feeling refreshed after resting our feet for an hour or two we decided to spend a little more time in Brooklyn and took a cab to Franny’s, a pizza joint that was ranked a favorite place to eat in the world by top chef’s of the United States.

Seeing a trend here?  Eat, drink, eat more, drink more, walk it all off.

A taxi ride back to the hotel and just like that my photo crazy day was over.

Our anniversary was the next day and we spent it shopping in the morning and then in the second row center at a taping of David Letterman!  Afterwards we gussied up one more time for the most romantic dinner of my life at One if by Land Two if by Sea and had another favorite meal of all time.  The scallops….ohhhh dear lord the scallops.

It was so nice to get away, just Jon and I, and get lost in such an incredible place.  We reminisced a lot on the past year, speculated about our future, and constantly thanked the stars for how lucky we are in our present.

Thank you Jon for whisking me away on such a memorable trip.  My life has changed in ways I never thought were possible since the day you entered it.  You have made more of my dreams come true that I ever dared hoped for and we’re only one year of marriage in.

I can’t wait to see what’s up next : )

Wedding Weekend Part 3 – The Wedding!

Whew.

I’m running out of steam on the blogging surge today.

However, I will not rest until all wedding photo thirsts are quenched!

(before we start I would again like to add that my duties this day were maid of honor/personal assistant and I shot what I could when I had a second – I was not the hired photographer – these would be much better if I had…promise)

The third and final installment of the Jagim Wedding Spectacular : )

Look at those two lovebirds posing for photo’s the day of their wedding.  So cute.Pretty flowers doing their best to hang on through the heat and humidity.  The A-Team (minus me of course).Andrew’s stepdad and wonderful mother.  It was so special to watch Mary all weekend reacting to her first of three son’s get married.  She was so proud of him and rightfully so because she raised a wonderful man.  Vanessa’s three adorable little nephews fascinated by the water feature in the park.  My walking partner Mike and his beautiful wife Katie!

All right everyone the time has come for what it’s all about…ceremony time.

Their ceremony took place in a bandshell in the middle of all this beautiful green space next to the water.  To prevent any of the guests from seeing the blushing bride before it all began, we shoved delicately placed her in an air conditioned car near the site.  I had the privilege of sitting in there with her, blotting makeup, applying lip gloss, and offering calming words.  I can so clearly remember how I felt in those same moments just a year ago, a crazy mix of excitement, nerves, sadness that it was almost about to be over so quickly, and elated happiness.  She felt all those same things.

Sometimes weddings can seem like an extravagant and unnecessary show.  I think most of the time that’s the case when the relationship itself is a bit of a show.  But you have to admit that when it’s the real deal, and especially when it involves people you’re particularly close to, they can be really magical.  Weddings aren’t just about all the things everyone plans for over the course of year.  I’ve found that the best parts about them are the little moments you couldn’t plan.   The time in the car, seeing yourself in your wedding dress, the glance at your new husband, the feelings you experience that you never expected.

This was my first time being in a wedding as an adult.  I have been a flower girl twice and was a junior bridesmaid in my aunt Megan’s wedding, but those weren’t the same.  To not only attend, but to stand right next to, your closest friend on her wedding day was a pretty cool experience for me.  I thought I would dread it, the whole ‘bridesmaid’ bit, but I hope to do it again some day.

(All ceremony photo credit has to be given to Jon!  Thanks Honey!)
This is one of my favorite shots from the whole weekend.   Great photo Jon!

Jon coming through with another great shot!  Andrew and his brother Ben hugging it out.
I know you’re worried about my wonky face here.  You can relax.  That’s just what it looks like when I’m trying not to trip, not to cry, and not to throw up from nerves.

It’s official!!!

Let’s party.

Can’t possibly enter a classy reception without first stopping at a local bar for some wedding party celebrating!

The reception was a total blast and everyone danced until they kicked us out.

I have a rule that once Piano Man comes on and pants come off, it’s time to shut the camera down.

Thank you Vanessa and Andrew for a spectacular weekend, for sharing your friends and family with all of us, and for some great memories.

Wedding Weekend Part 2 – Getting Ready

*a brief disclaimer – I was not the hired photographer for this wedding – I just snapped what I could when I wasn’t busy being the maid of honor.

Vanessa and Andrew chose La Crosse for their wedding day for several reasons.

Andrew went to UND for undergrad but attended grad school in La Crosse before going on to A&M in Texas for his PhD.  Vanessa and Andrew fell in love there while falling in love with each other, and Andrew proposed to Vanessa on the top of a bluff overlooking the Mississippi during a trip there last summer.  Finally, it’s just so beautiful that they couldn’t help but be swept up in it all.  It’s so lovely and the morning of their wedding day was no different.

Everyone woke up to sunny skies, very little humidity and tons of excitement.  I cannot account for what the boys were doing all day, but the girls met again in the lobby bright and early to head to the salon.
Vanessa had this incredibly calm and collected attitude throughout the whole weekend.  She was truly one of those wonderful brides that was able to let go of all anxiety regarding how anything went.  She simply wanted to marry Andrew.Tebow was spoiled fortunate enough to be the one of their three dogs (children) small enough to travel with Andrew and Vanessa for the wedding.  He was so sweet watching his ‘mommy’ get ready to marry his ‘daddy’.  Andrew is one of the most caring and big hearted men I’ve ever met.  I could not have chosen a better man for my best friend.  He proved that once again the day of the wedding, doting on Vanessa, worrying about how she was doing, and had the sweetest love letter planned for her to read while getting ready.   Seeing her happiness, laughter,  and smiles that morning was the best part of my day.
Obviously.I was grateful to meet and get to know most of the girls in the wedding party during both Vanessa’s bachelorette party and bridal shower.  Every girl in attendance was a completely supportive and calming influence on Vanessa in every way imaginable.  Nobody was dramatic, nobody was smothering, and thank goodness for that because I would have kicked some ass.  Lucky for her she has some amazing women in her life and those that she chose to stand beside her did so with such grace and love.  It was wonderful to be a part of.  Vanessa’s “something borrowed” were the earrings that I wore the day I got married.  She and I had the same problem while searching for jewelry…nothing worked!  I had these custom made to compliment my dress and Vanessa and I have very similar taste so they ended up working perfectly.  They were beautiful on her.
Judy is V’s mom and she took a total hands on approach to everything she touched regarding the wedding.  It was amazing!  She hand made Vanessa’s garter from fabric taken from her own wedding gown.  She sewed on two lockets that held meaningful photo’s and their wedding date.

Here’s where I’m going to get choked up.

Vanessa has been my best friend since we were 19 years old.  She has always been a beautiful girl in the way that she would say I have always been a beautiful girl.  What I mean is we were both 14 and awkward once.  We were both 19 and awkward once.  We’ve had braces, weird hairstyles, questionable hair color choices, and bizarre taste in clothing.  But she’s always been beautiful.

This day was something different altogether.

I didn’t see it right away.

I was with her the night before and she definitely had a content and happy look to her.

I was with her the morning of her wedding, but everything was too chaotic and happened too fast for me to notice.

It wasn’t until the photographer, Vanessa, and myself spent a few moments alone getting her into her dress that I saw it.

She was EASILY the most beautiful I had ever seen her and the most stunning bride I’ve ever witnessed.  It went beyond her hair, beyond her makeup and beyond her dress.  She looked so serene and so happy that it was all I could do not to burst.  She was gorgeous.

Annabelle, her flower girl, seeing her for the first time after talking about (insert southern little girl accent here) ‘Vanessa’s Weddin’ for months and months.  So. Adorable.Everyone in the wedding party was ready for action and the pictures were set to start any minute.  I snagged these pictures right before Vanessa went to see Andrew for the first time that day.
And with those final two images of my glowing and gorgeous best friend, I’ll say ‘that’s all folks’ until tomorrow’s final post:  Wedding Weekend Part 3 – The Wedding

My Muse

I spent the afternoon with Miss Finley on Tuesday and as usual could not resist snapping some photo’s of her in the beautiful late morning light.

Those eyelashes and sweet little nose just kill me.  This was one of the first shoots I’ve done with her where she had a vested interest in the end result.  After nearly every shot she wanted to try a new face and then approve the image.  Maybe I’ll give her the photography bug eventually!  Here were her top choices : )

I think she picked some good ones!  It was a fun day and I’m already looking forward to hanging with her again next week!

Have a lovely Wednesday everybody.

Baby Jaxon

I had the unexpected honor to take photos of this little nugget early last week.

Quite simply put, he was an absolute angel.I headed down to the exquisite Denver children’s hospital where baby Jaxon has been for the past few weeks while he gets good and strong and ready to go home.

He’s so lucky to have been born into such a wonderful family and I felt truly truly blessed that they asked me to help document the very beginning of his life.

I hadn’t been in a hospital since little Miss Livi spent similar time in the NICU.  I wasn’t expecting my reaction to it all and quite honestly I was overwhelmed.  I am a little bit embarrassed to say that when I  got in the elevator to leave I just crumbled.  Like I said, so grateful and honored to have been asked to be there.

The Webb Family

Last week I had the privilege to spend the morning with the Webb family!  Avon and Paxton are three and one and busy busy busy!  I had my work cut out for me keeping them in one place let alone getting them to look at me.  I had to laugh at myself making the silly noises my mom used to make to get our attention as kids.  These are a few of my favorites from the day.
